So you’ve picked out your niche and you’re ready to launch your first product on Etsy, but you’re not sure exactly what you should name your shop.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
Unfortunately, one of the biggest hurdles for people in getting their jobs set up is choosing a name.
So we wanted to put together this quick article to help you not only understand the process you can use to choose the right name for your empty shop but also give you a wide variety of examples that may work for some of the most popular niches on the site.
What Makes an Etsy Shop Name “Good”?
At the end of the day, you don’t just want to pick any name for your shop, you want it to be good…but what makes a shop name “good” in the eyes of Esty and Esty shoppers?
Easy to Remember
The first rule to coming up with a good shop name for your Esty shop is that it should be easy to remember.
Not only does this help us to ensure that people who have purchased from us in the past can come directly back to our shop again in the future by searching for our name on Etsy, but it also allows them to share it with their friends and have it be something they will remember as well.
Adding a bit of humor to your store name or using a fun word or phrase related to your niche is a great way of achieving this goal.
Reflects What You Sell
The second rule for choosing a good shop name is to make sure that your shop name reflects what you sell.
For example, If you are selling to the fishing market, make sure to include something related to fish or fishing.
It not only helps our customers know that they’re in the right place when they arrive at our shop page but can also give us a nice little added SEO bonus.
Choose a Unique Name
Lastly, you want to make sure that what you are choosing is a unique store name.
Although Etsy won’t let you choose a name that’s already taken, there’s only applies to names on their platform.
An Ideal shop name is something that’s not only available within Etsy but is available outside of the Etsy platform as well.
We will dive into two ways to check the availability of your shop name in the How to choose an Etsy shop name section below.
How To Choose an Etsy Shop Name
Now that you have a better understanding of what makes for a good Etsy shop name, let’s take a look at the process we recommend using to choose a name.
Try and Keep it Short
The very first thing you’ll want to keep in mind are the constraints of what Etsy allows a shop to call itself.
Every Etsy shop must have a name that is 20 characters or less and does not include spaces.
Additionally, since your name is likely to contain more than one word, you are allowed to capitalize the first letter of each word to have them stand apart.
Additionally, keep in mind that as we mentioned above, you’ll want to make sure that your name has at least one keyword or commonly used a phrase from your niche.
Brainstorm a Potential List of Names
With those constraints in mind, sit down and brainstorm as many potential names for your niche as possible.
If you are finding it difficult to come up with some ideas, start by writing down two or three adjectives that people may use to describe products in your space.
For example, if your store will be selling decorative items for mountain cabins, you might write down ” rustic” or “woodsy” as some of the adjectives.
From here, create a list of words that describe the product you sell, such as decor, Home Goods, or decorations.
Then, all we have to do is create combinations of these words until we arrive at a few we like.
Use A.I. To Help
If you’re really struggling with the brainstorming process, you can use an artificial intelligence tool, such as chatGPT, to help with the process.
Start by asking ChatGpt to give you a list of adjectives related to your niche.
Next, ask it to give you a list of ways to describe the types of products you sell.
Finally, ask it to generate as many options as you would like, using the adjectives and ways to describe your products and giving it the constraints of an Etsy title.
Check For Trademarks
Once you have three to five names that you would potentially like to use for your Esty shop, we need to see which (if any) are available to use.
The first step in this process is to run a trademark search to make sure no one has trademarked that word or phrase.
This can be done very easily by going to USPTO.gov and using their trademark search feature.
Check For URL Availability
Once you have verified that no one has a trademark on your potential Etsy shop name, you want to go one step further and make sure that there is a domain available for that shop name.
If you are not already aware, the word domain in this context refers to a website address.
Although there are lots of different kinds of domains, the most popular and one you should be looking for is a.com.
To check for availability, you can go to any website that sells domains, our typical go-to is GoDaddy.com.
From here, all you need to do is run a search on the potential name you want to use for your shop, if the domain is available buy it, Even if you don’t plan on building your own website right away, it’s worth a few dollars to secure your investment.
If the domain is not available, you’ll want to type in the full domain (yourshopname.com), to see if it’s actively being used or if someone just happened to buy that combination of words previously.
If the domain is not currently active or is active and unrelated to what you plan on selling, feel free to do another search on GoDaddy and add the word shop or co to the end of your potential shop name idea to see if that domain is available.
Once you have verified that there are no trademarks associated with your potential shop name and that there is a domain available related to your shop name, then you can move into Etsy’s shop creation back end to make sure it’s available there as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Etsy Shop Names
Before you go about creating your etsy shop and choosing your name, I wanted to quickly address some of the frequently asked questions that we get in regard to Etsy shop names.
Does Your Etsy Shop Name Matter?
One of the most common questions we get is it. Does your Etsy shop name even matter?
It does, for two main reasons.
First, especially as Etsy moves more towards supporting brands and helping customers connect with brands they can purchase from multiple times, having a memorable shop name will become more important in the etsy ecosystem.
Secondly, having nature-related keywords in your store name not only makes it easier for your products to be found when someone runs a search on Etsy but also helps customers know that they are in the right place once they get to one of your listings.
This subtle, but often overlooked, advantage can be a nice conversion rate booster.
Can I Change My Etsy Shop Name?
Yes, generally speaking, you can change the name of your Etsy shop up to five times after you’ve opened your shop to the public.
Even if you’ve already changed your name five times, it’s still possible to do so by contacting Etsy’s store support team and having them review your request.
Does My Etsy Shop Name Have To Be The Same As My Business Name?
Although in most cases, having an officially registered business, such as an LLC, is not a requirement to sell on the Etsy platform, We often get asked if the shop name has to be the same as the business name.
It does not and the two don’t have to be related in any way.
